About John Hoedl, M.A.

Born in northern Alberta, John spent his childhood and later years working on the family farm. He attended Grande Prairie Regional College from 1978 to 1981, and in 1983 received his B.P.E. (Bachelor of Physical Education) from the University of Alberta.

John subsequently worked for over 10 years in various child welfare/social services positions in Edmonton. In 1997, he received a Master’s Degree in Counselling from Gonzaga University, Spokane and in the next year began his studies at the C.G. Jung Institute in Zurich, Switzerland. In 2006 he received his diploma, moved to Edmonton, Alberta, and began his private practice.

John is a past president of the Western Canadian Association of Jungian Analysts (WCAJA) and current co-president of the International Society for Psychology as the Discipline of Interiority (ISPDI).

Training

The training facility at the C.G. Jung Institute (one of some 20 located all over the world) is a rigorous PhD equivalent program, requiring a minimum of a Master’s degree to apply and is a minimum of four years in length.

Trainees, many of whom are MDs, psychiatrists and psychologists, study a wide variety of areas including: psychopathology, religion, interpretation of dreams, mythology, ethnology and picture interpretation. All trainees must undergo at least 300 hours of personal analysis, as well as 200 hours of supervised work with patients. A practicum at a mental health facility is also required.

Today there are a growing number of analysts and training institutes in the world, stemming from a variety of countries including Switzerland, Germany, England, Brazil, Japan, the U.S. and Canada.
